Do you think school as it is today is getting our students ready for their future?

I think we can all agree that in some aspects it does, but in others it simply fails to get students ready for even basic tasks like writing successful emails and applying ideas and concepts to todays digital world.  While we teach things like math,  when is the last time a student could actually explain what a quadratic equation solves and how we might use it in real life? We practice skills but don't often apply them. Even beyond this basic application, our students need to talk about and explain how the concepts they learn apply to real life. Because they will graduate needing skills that help them stand apart in a very crowded digital space and creator economy. Enter FlipToks - having students create TikTok-style videos in class to show learning.

What will our student's future be like? We can never know fully, but what we do know is this... they WILL NEED to be able to bring people to their future business endeavors whether they are real estate agents, attorneys or doctors. Ever heard of Dr. Pimple Popper? Chances are you have and its because of her massive social media following. She understands branding, she understands posting and she is probably one of the most successful dermatologists on the planet because of it. Our students need to learn to create buzz,  and to create compelling content- because they live in a "word of mouth" world.  Gen Z and Gen Alpha don't watch TV, they don't read paper magazines and they often trust their social networks over experts.

While we need to concentrate on skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic we also need to help them think deeply about content and be ready for a world that is highly digital. Giving them an option to create TikTok style videos can do that.

This option is not for every student, but why not take advantage of what they are doing outside of class? For teachers, it is often hard to do that - because as a whole we are not content creators - we are lesson designers. So let me help. Here are two resources to do that.

1. First, here is a template you can use to get students thinking about creating TikTok-style videos in class BUT on Flip.com where its safe and private.

2. Next, here is a slide deck you can customize to help students understand the types of videos and the important elements needed - so they can be more successful create one. This comes with examples to help them visualize these videos.

The slide deck should show up below - if it doesn't just click on link above.

Students historically have been bored in class, this new way of thinking about how they can show  learning can help change all of that. I can't wait to see what they create! Feel free to share #infusedclassroom
