10 Best Chrome and Edge Extensions for Teachers and Students

Now that most teachers have been teaching more digitally, many want to know the best Chrome Extensions for teachers and Students.  To help,  I have started a new series on Tik Tok where I am highlighting my favorite Chrome Extensions and how to use them. The videos have been big hits - and after a request from one of the viewers, I decided to write this post. 

What are Chrome Extensions?

Chrome Extensions are tools that live inside of your Chrome Browser and provide additional functionality by connecting to other web utilities.  Most people don’t know this but Microsoft Edge is built on Chromium, so all of the same extensions work there as well. 

So here is my list of the top Chrome Extensions for Teachers and Students ✅

✅ Color Zilla - Color Eye Dropper for Picking Colors 

The best Chrome Extension for Teachers is Color Zilla.  It is perfect when you need to find the exact color and then match it in something else like Google Slides or Canva? Color Zilla is an eye dropper that works on any site or with any program. Match colors like a  graphic artist pro. This is my most used Chrome Extension. 👉🏼

✅ Bit.ly - Custom Link Shortener

This Chrome extension allows you to customize leaks and it also allows you to customize the back half of your link as well as check on how many people linked on that particular link.

✅ Crafty Text - Large OnScreen Text to Focus Students

Crafty text is a simple Chrome extension that allows you to type something in a box and then it Becomes auto-magically big on the screen making sure that students pay attention to what might be coming next or something important they need to know to move forward.

✅ Wakelet- Curating Tool (Think of it as Pinterest on Steroids)

Wakelet is a content curation platform where teachers and students can save links, social media posts, videos, and images as items to be organized into private or public collections. Users can add notes to each Item in order to tell a story, ask questions, or give directions. Great for stations or differentiating instruction.

✅ Google Keep - Note-taking Online Made Easy

As a Chrome extension, Google Keep allows students to select the icon in the extensions area and then it opens a simple note-taking box for students to take notes either from a website or anywhere that is on the web. These notes are then saved to their notes app. It’s a great way to take a quick note while surfing the internet or reading for information.

✅ Tab Scissors - Automatically Put Two Tabs Side by Side to Work More Efficiently

This extension splits a window into two screens at the selected tab. If you have at least two tabs in the selected Chrome window, it will split that window into two smaller side-by-side windows. All the tabs on the left side of the selected tab will stay in the left window, and the rest will move to the window on the right.

While this extension is unofficial - it takes one of the best features of Microsoft and allows Google Users to enable the functionality on some sites. After you install this extension, you'll be able to select text and right-click it to use Microsoft's Immersive Reader with it!

✅ Boomerang for Gmail - Email Productivity Extraordinaire

Provides The best follow up reminders and Remind you if you don’t hear back. While there is a paid version for teachers the free version is often enough.

✅ Insert Learning - Insert Instructional Content on Any Web Page

Teachers can insert questions, discussions, and insight directly into any website. When students go to that website, they can respond to those questions and discussions, see that insight, and take their own notes. Use InsertLearning to turn any website into an interactive learning experience!
